Vanessa Sackeyfio – MSc Process Technology & Management, University of Strathclyde
I
graduated from the University of Strathclyde in November 2008 with an MSc in
Process Technology and Management. The course, which is offered on a
distance learning basis, is aimed at meeting both the development needs of
technology graduates at an early stage in their industrial careers, in
addition to those with more experience who are looking to update their
technical knowledge and skills.
I was particularly intrigued by the diversity in scope
and nature of the individual modules which make up the course. I believe
that it is important to have a good understanding of the various functions
that make up a company and the impact that each one has on the others in
order to build a sustainable and successful business. This course has helped
me gain that understanding, addressed not only from one perspective, but
from a combination of both the technology and management points of view.
Examples of the modules offered on this course
include: General and Strategic Management; Financial Management; Marketing
and Human Resources Management as well as technical modules such as
Manufacturing Technology; Process Design; Modelling and Simulation; Advanced
Separation Systems and Process Control Strategies. In addition there is also
a need to complete a research project; I worked on ‘an investigation into
the effects the establishment and implementation of an environmental
management systems has on a business’. This research project was
tremendously appropriate and beneficial to my job as an environmental
manager. In addition I found the series of intensive workshops, organised to
encouraged direct contact between lecturers and students, particularly
useful; the networking and technology transfer between everyone involved was
great!
Pursuing this course has had a profound impact on my
professional development. I have built up and honed my technology and
management skill set enabling me to consider business issues from a broader
perspective. In addition graduating with this degree is a big step in me
becoming a Chartered Engineer. I found it to be challenging but enjoyable,
and if I had the opportunity to relive my life, it is definitely one of the
things I would do again.
My thanks go to the Panasonic Trust and Richmond Ice
Cream Ltd for their support in terms of funding my studies.
