The Panasonic Trust Awards
Rakesh Proag – MSc Project and Enterprise Management,
University College London
After
graduating with a first class honours degree in Civil Engineering, with the
rapid changes in the construction industry my first priority was to gain
Chartered Engineer status. I then embarked on my dream to do a postgraduate
degree in Project Management.
In 2008 I enrolled on a part time basis at UCL’s Bartlett School of
Construction and Project Management. With the help and support of the
Panasonic Trust my goal was realised. At the beginning it was difficult to
establish a good balance between study and work, however after completing
the first module my confidence grew and I found the right balance.
I graduated in 2010 with a commendation for my final year project. As this
programme has been accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered
Surveyors (RICS) it gives me the opportunity to be a member of both the RICS
Project Management – RICS Built Environment Group and the Association for
Project Management.
The course gave me the ability to understand the philosophy behind
contemporary management thinking, the management of enterprises and the way
projects are best defined, developed and delivered. The course also
highlighted how to use concepts, tools and techniques during the project
life cycle from definition and development stages through to operation and
maintenance.
This course has had a positive effect on my professional development and I
now feel equipped to deliver both soft and hard skills, using different
techniques and managing varied projects and behaviours within the
industries. The key to good project management has been creating good
relationships, building trust and improving communication.
I am very grateful for the support of the Panasonic Trust; it has given me
the opportunity to think ahead and may be the precursor to a PhD in the
future.
