Jake Harris – MSc Engineering & Manufacturing Management, Coventry University

Picture of Jake HarrisThe main benefit of the MSc in Engineering & Manufacturing Management course has been learning the latest industrial methods and applying these to the workplace in real-time. This has enabled me to improve the operational performance and increase the efficiency of our European test and development operations. The engineering management modules have also provided me with the tools and techniques to make investment decisions based on both qualitative and quantitative merits and demonstrated how engineering can be sustainable and commercially beneficial.

Other highlights of the course have been the modules dealing with lean operations and supply chain management modules; these have been of particular benefit as they have enabled me to manage suppliers and subcontractors in a more effective way.

The inspiration for my dissertation on lean product development came from the product development modules and enabled me to improve Simpson Strong-Tie’s European new product development process.

After completing my undergraduate degree I was awarded a place on the Institution of Mechanical Engineer’s internet based records management system (eMPDS) in order to achieve full professional qualification. I am now in the process of becoming a chartered engineer with this course playing an important part in me achieving this career goal and in my on-going professional development.
